Understanding the Clinical Logic

Outpatient (Part B)

For scans and labs (like MRIs), we aggregate everything into a Total Walk-out Price. This bundle combines the doctor's expertise and the facility's equipment fee.

Key Insight: Outpatient prices can vary by 400% even within the same ZIP code.

Inpatient (Part A)

For hospital stays (like Sepsis), we show the Full Episode Cost. These are billed as "Global Stays" covering the entire admission from bed-days to pharmacy.

Key Insight: These rates are negotiated at a facility level for the entire stay.

The Data Lag (A Reality Check)

CMS typically releases the comprehensive Utilization and Payment PUF with a significant lag to allow for claim finalization and auditing. The 2023 data displayed here was released in April 2025 and remains the current gold-standard baseline.
